Oak Herringbone Flooring with Curved Border in Shotley Bridge

Project Overview
This Shotley Bridge project involved the installation of a new oak herringbone floor through the ground-floor living areas and hallway.
A key feature of the installation was the staircase, where the flooring layout was designed around the existing curved newel base rather than simply finishing against it with a conventional straight border. The oak was carefully fitted to follow the shape of the staircase before the complete floor was sanded and finished on site.

Setting Out the Herringbone & Two-Block Border
The oak herringbone flooring was installed throughout the ground-floor living areas and hallway, with a two-block border framing the main floor areas.
The layout required careful setting out to maintain the herringbone pattern and accommodate the curved staircase detail, where the border was shaped to follow the existing newel base.

Setting out the curved border around the existing staircase before installing the bespoke oak herringbone flooring in Shotley Bridge.
One of the most distinctive features of this installation is the bespoke curved oak border surrounding the base of the existing staircase.
Rather than introducing a straight edge against the staircase, the border was formed to follow its curved profile, creating a natural transition between the new herringbone flooring and the existing timber staircase.
This detail complements the two-block border used throughout the installation and gives the staircase a considered, integrated finish.

Sanding & Site Finishing
Following installation, the new oak flooring was sanded and finished on site.
The herringbone flooring, two-block border and bespoke curved staircase detail were all finished together, creating a consistent appearance throughout the ground-floor living areas and hallway.

Completed Floor
The completed installation brings together the oak herringbone flooring, two-block border and bespoke curved staircase detail throughout the ground-floor living areas and hallway.
The 2K coloured oil provides a consistent tone across the newly installed flooring, highlighting the oak grain and bringing the individual elements of the installation together.
