Softwood Floor Restoration & Repairs in Riding Mill

Finished original softwood flooring after restoration and coloured 2K oil treatment in Riding Mill

Project Overview

This Riding Mill project involved restoring original softwood floorboards that had been heavily altered and damaged over time, including a large section that had previously been removed and replaced with sheet material.

The existing floor was carefully opened up so the damaged areas could be repaired properly rather than simply patched over. Reclaimed softwood was selected to suit the original boards and fitted in staggered lengths so the repairs blended more naturally into the existing floor.

Once the repair work was complete, the floor was sanded and finished throughout to bring the original timber back into use while retaining the variation and character of the older boards.

Repairing Missing & Damaged Flooring

A large section of the original softwood floor had previously been removed and replaced with sheet material, while other areas contained damaged and inconsistent boards.

Rather than treating the missing section as one obvious patch, the surrounding boards were cut back at different points and reclaimed softwood was fitted in staggered lengths. This helped break up the footprint of the previous repair and allowed the replacement boards to sit more naturally amongst the original flooring.

Where suitable, reclaimed timber was used because its age, dimensions and character generally blend better with older softwood floors than new material.

Blending the Repairs

Once the reclaimed boards had been fitted, the repaired areas were worked back into the surrounding floor so the replacement timber followed the existing board layout rather than standing out as a separate patch.

The staggered joints and variation within the reclaimed softwood helped the new sections sit more naturally alongside the original boards before the whole floor was sanded together.

Sanding & Finishing

Once the repair work was complete, the original and reclaimed boards were sanded together so the repaired areas sat level with the surrounding floor and the old surface finish was removed.

The floor was then finished with a coloured 2K oil, adding depth and warmth to the softwood while allowing the natural grain, age and variation between the original and reclaimed boards to remain visible.

Finished Floor

The completed floor retains the character of the original softwood while the repaired areas sit naturally within the surrounding boards.

The coloured 2K oil gives the floor a richer, more even tone without disguising the age, grain and variation within the timber, allowing the original and reclaimed sections to read as one restored floor rather than a series of separate repairs.
